Munhamek solidifies G1 Stradbroke Handicap credentials
Munhamek, trained by Nick Ryan, solidified his Stradbroke Handicap credentials with an impressive victory in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Starting at $7, the seven-year-old settled towards the back of the field under the guidance of jockey Billy Egan.
Egan made a decisive move around the turn, maneuvering Munhamek past his rivals before unleashing a powerful sprint to win comfortably by 1.5 lengths ahead of Charmmebaby ($13) and Brigantine ($4.40).
The win caused a significant shift in Stradbroke markets, with Munhamek’s odds slashed from $101 to $26.
“He’s backed up before and if everything goes alright in the next week, he’ll be there” Stable representative Aaron Mitchell said.
“Since the horse has been up here he’s thrived and ticked all the boxes. He’s made it look easy in the end.”
Victorian jockey Billy Egan celebrated a race-to-race double, having previously won on Foxy Frida.
Egan shared his belief that Munhamek could handle the quick back-up in the Stradbroke Handicap, acknowledging trainer Nick Ryan’s proficiency in managing horses in such situations.
“Yes certainly and Nick’s very good with horses on the backup as well,” Egan said.
With Munhamek’s impressive Spear Chief triumph, his chances in the upcoming Stradbroke Handicap have significantly improved.
