Jockey Wiremu Pinn gets feel for Australian winners

New Zealand jockey Wiremu Pinn continues to tick off the milestones early in his stint in Australia and can now say he’s a Saturday city winner.

But not content with his first win on Australian racing’s biggest day of the week, the boom apprentice racked up a winning double.

After scoring in Race 2 aboard the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Extratwo, two races later he partnered Frigid to victory for John Leek Jr.

The win aboard Frigid was special for Pinn as it was Leek who provided him with his first Australian winner, which came at Mornington late last month.

But the 24-year-old was delighted to score aboard Extratwo in the $150,000 Quayclean Handicap (1300m) at his first ride for Australia’s leading trainers.

“It’s good to get a winner for Ciaron and David, they’re cool guys, obviously they’re top-class trainers, so it’s good to be able to ride one for them,” Pinn said.

“It’s good to get a winner here on a Saturday meeting.”

Pinn had the daughter of Toronado, who was heavily supported to start $2 Ladbrokes favourite, one off the fence behind the leading division before producing her shortly after straightening and taking control of the 1300-metre event midway down the straight.

She scored by 1-3/4 lengths from stablemate Hazel Baby ($19) with Lady Jones ($13) narrowly denying the Maher/Eustace stable the trifecta when she edged out Movader ($19) for third.

“She’s definitely the fastest filly I’ve ridden since I’ve been here on Australian turf,” Pinn said.

The Bob Peters-owned Frigid ($6) scored her first win since crossing the Nullarbor when she held off the fast finish of $101 pop Glamdam to stretch her record to four wins from nine starts in the $80,000 Senet Gambling Law Experts Handicap (1600m).
