Gai Waterhouse has sights set on Cox Plate 2023

Gai Waterhouse has revealed that Alligator Blood is likely to return to Melbourne for the spring season, with the prestigious Cox Plate 2023 as the primary target.

Speaking to Racing.com, Waterhouse expressed confidence in Alligator Blood’s abilities, highlighting his success on the track and his proven stamina over 2000 meters.

Having won multiple Group 1 races and performed admirably in last year’s Cox Plate on a heavy track, Waterhouse believes the Cox Plate is the ideal stage for Alligator Blood to showcase his champion qualities.

While considering the new Sydney-based race, the King Charles Stakes, Waterhouse and her team are inclined to prioritize the Melbourne Spring Carnival based on the gelding’s impressive form last year.

Alligator Blood, trained in partnership with Adrian Bott, claimed victory in the Underwood Stakes and the Champions Stakes, and placed well in other races during his Melbourne campaign.

Bott confirmed that Alligator Blood is currently in training in Sydney and will undergo a trial at the end of the month.

Waterhouse also provided an update on imported mare Alcohol Free, who has returned to training after a beneficial spell.

The mare, sold for $10 million last year, has shown remarkable development according to Waterhouse.

While aiming to secure a slot in The Everest, Waterhouse emphasized the range of options available for Alcohol Free’s upcoming races.

Alligator Blood is currently priced at $17 with Ladbrokes to win the Cox Plate, and the team remains hopeful for a successful campaign in the spring season.
