Well renowned Tommy Hughes Snr passes away
Beloved Flemington trainer Tommy Hughes Senior has passed away at the age of 93, leaving the racing community in mourning.
Hughes, known for his exceptional horsemanship and notable career, trained a string of renowned horses, including Grand Cidium, Rechabite, Umatilla, Grey Song, and the unforgettable Salamander, who narrowly missed victory in the 1979 Melbourne Cup.
His strategic prowess and successful plunges made him a feared opponent by bookmakers, particularly at Flemington.
The Victoria Racing Club Chairman Neil Wilson expressed heartfelt condolences, acknowledging Hughes’ significant contributions to Flemington and extending sympathies to his family and friends.
“Tommy Hughes Senior was an important part of the fabric of Flemington and many people enjoyed his company at the racetrack. We send our condolences to Tommy’s family and friends.” Wilson said in a statement.
Tommy Hughes Senior’s legacy also includes the unforgettable tale of Salamander’s near-triumph in the 1979 Melbourne Cup, where Hughes had backed the horse with a substantial bet, only to be denied victory by a short half-head margin.
Grand Cidium, another remarkable horse trained by Hughes, claimed victory in the 1973 Caulfield Guineas and showcased the trainer’s skill in nurturing top-class competitors.
With the passing of Tommy Hughes Senior, the racing community mourns the loss of a legendary figure whose impact on the sport will forever be remembered.
