Amelia’s Jewel allotted 56kg in Toorak Handicap

Posted by RS NewsWire at 7:11am on October 10th

has been set a task that has completed just once in the metric era if she is to win Saturday’s Toorak Handicap at Caulfield, weights for which were released on Monday.

The Simon Miller-trained four-year-old, who was one of 25 nominations for the 1600-metre handicap, was allotted 56kg.

More Joyous, who won under 58kg in 2010, is the only mare to have carried at least 56kg to victory since 1972.

Canny Lass and Divine Madonna, who won with 55kg in 1986 and 2007 respectively, are among eight other mares to have won in the past 50 years but the only others to carry more than 52.5kg.

Amelia’s Jewel will be chasing a third-straight win of her maiden eastern-states campaign, which kicked off with Group 2 wins in the Let’s Elope Stakes and Stocks Stakes.

Topweight for the Toorak Handicap is the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Huetor, who has 58kg.

Last year’s Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile and Doncaster Mile placegetter My Oberon have 57kg, Tasmanian star The Inevitable 56.5kg and last-start Group 2 Feehan Stakes winner Pinstriped 56kg.

Amenable is this year’s lightly-weighted leading contender not yet guaranteed a run with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained four-year-old 20th in order of entry after receiving 52kg.

The Toorak Handicap is restricted to a field of 18 plus two emergencies.

The Toorak Handicap is one of three Group 1s at Caulfield on Saturday with entries also closing on Monday for the $1 million The Might And Power (2000m), which has attracted 14 potential starters.

Heading the entries is last-start Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood who has been joined by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stablemate Just Fine, who is undefeated in three starts in Australia included a last-start win in the Group 1 The Metropolitan.

Underwood Stakes third placegetter Duais also entered, along with Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes winner Gold Trip, who connections said on Monday morning was most likely to next be seen in the following week’s $5 million Caulfield Cup.

Entries for Saturday’s other Group 1, the Caulfield Guineas (1600m), closed last month with the field for the $3 million event to be finalised at Tuesday morning’s barrier draw.
