Japanese Caulfield Cup 2023 hope out to emulate Mer De Glace

Breakup undertook a reconnaissance mission at Caulfield on Wednesday morning with a course-proper gallop at the scene of Saturday's $5 million Caulfield Cup only one reason behind the excursion.

Damian Lane, who will ride the Japanese galloper in the 2400-metre handicap, had his first sit aboard the six-year-old, who also tested out a special stall that has been created for him.

A raceday box has been fitted out with rubber matting for the entire, who can get anxious around other horses, with the ground and walls modified and a dividing wall installed to keep him at ease.

Trainer Tatsuya Yoshioka was on hand to inspect the stall and watch him work and, through interpreter Kosi Kawakami, said how grateful he was for the efforts that have been made.

"He's been a bit colty, a bit reactive to other horses, and that is the reason we set up the raceday stall like that specially for him," he said.

"We really appreciate the support from the Melbourne Racing Club, being helpful and supportive to the horse."

Breakup was the lone horse to work at Caulfield on Wednesday and Lane, who won the 2019 Caulfield Cup aboard Japan's Mer De Glace, was happy with the first impression he gave him in a low-key gallop.

"He handled himself well, he was a touch casual on his own, but he worked through the line nicely and he was in good order," Lane said.

"He changed lead legs well, he cornered well, so it (Caulfield) should be no problems for him."

Breakup, a six-year-old son of Novellist, has won five of 21 starts, including the Group 2 Republica Argentina (2500m) in November last year.

He has not started since the Group 1 Takarazuka Kinen (2200m) on June 25, in which he finished 12th of 17, seven lengths behind champion Equinox.

Breakup will run in both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup and Yoshioka is confident he can be a force in both races.

"Breakup has travelled really well and I'm very happy with the way he's going so far," he said.

"We are here to win both Cups and we are confident about both at the same level."

Breakup is currently a $9 chance in Caulfield Cup odds with online bookmakers.
