McEvoys Dreaming of G2 Sandown Guineas success

Posted by RS NewsWire at 5:41pm on December 1st

Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy are looking to repeat the efforts of a former filly in their care by taking out the Sandown Guineas.

Pretty Brazen provided the father-and-son combination with a win in the Group 2 race at Sandown in 2019 and this year they will be represented by Sunset Dreaming.

Saturday’s edition of the Sandown Guineas will be run at Caulfield as the meeting was pushed back two weeks and transferred to the new venue in 2021.

Not that that is any concern for the McEvoys who would like to see Sunset Dreaming pick-up some Black Type to wind up her spring campaign.

Sunset Dreaming has raced on four occasions, winning twice on her home track at Ballarat with a second-place finish at Bendigo sandwiched in between those victories.

But it was Sunset Dreaming’s latest performance that convinced the McEvoy’s to consider a step up to the mile and take on the ‘the boys’ on Saturday.

Sunset Dreaming ran on from back in the field that day for fifth behind Run Harry Run in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1400m) on a day when it was hard to make ground.

“She’s a very nice filly and it certainly looks like the mile will suit,” Calvin McEvoy said.

“I thought her sectionals were very good in her last race when getting warm late in a race where it didn’t quite suit to be back where she was.

“The whole day was like that and importantly she has trained on well.

“It is aggressive placement, but she is a nice filly and I think she will run a nice race.”

McEvoy said Saturday’s race came around at the right time and with the Group 2 status, victory would be good for the filly’s future as a broodmare.

“The opinion we have of her, Black Type is important,” McEvoy said.

“We’ve won the race before with a filly, so it would be nice if she can follow up with a win also.

“She’s got a bit of quality, so let’s hope she’s up to it this time in.”
