Ryan privileged to saddle up Oliver’s last ride in the Gold Rush
In a poignant moment at Ascot on Saturday, trainer Nick Ryan will have the distinct honour of being the last to saddle legendary jockey Damien Oliver on Munhamek.
Expressing his disbelief, Ryan described the privilege as “unbelievable” and “very special,” hoping Munhamek could deliver a memorable swansong for Oliver.
Reflecting on their two-decade-long relationship, Ryan spoke warmly of Oliver’s support during his apprentice years, emphasizing Oliver’s instrumental role as number one for Lee Freedman.
As Munhamek gears up for the $1.5 million Group 3 Damien Oliver Gold Rush over 1400 meters, Ryan is optimistic about the horse’s chances, noting Munhamek’s equal second-favourite status alongside Ayrton.
“He’s definitely a good chance,” Ryan affirmed.
Damien Oliver, who recently rode Munhamek in a trial at Belmont, expressed satisfaction with the horse.
Ryan, pleased with Munhamek’s preparation under Aaron Mitchell in Perth, acknowledged the role of luck on race day.
“It would be nice to give a champion like him a farewell win.”
