Simon Miller confident Petula will be a big improver

Simon Miller is confident Petula will be a big improver when she headlines his assault at Bunbury today.

The Nicconi filly returns from a 55-day spell to race in the $125,000 Listed WA Breeders’ Classic (1200m).

Petula burst onto the scene as a two-year-old, winning her opening two races before Simon Miller pulled the pin on her successful maiden campaign.

Petula didn’t do much last preparation, failing to win a race, but did perform competitively against an array of Perth’s top three-year-old talent.

Petula had to settle for fourth placing in the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) with only Ripcord, Oscar’s Fortune and Augment ahead of her.

At her last appearance in December, she finished runner-up to speedy Albany galloper Final Siren who at that time was unbeaten in two outings.

Although she came up empty handed in the win category last campaign, Miller says Petula’s form is better than what the record shows.

He believes punters will see the best version of Petula at Bunbury this afternoon.

“She’s airborne,” Miller said on Tabradio.

“That little freshen up has done her the world of good.

“She’s got the right form lines going into the race.

“I think they’re strong form lines where she’s been.

“She hasn’t been far away from them.

“I would say she’s improved out of sight since last prep.

“I couldn’t be happier with her and she’ll run extremely well.”

Petula has drawn barrier six in the nine-horse line-up. Pat Carbery resumes his association with her.

The diminutive jockey rode Petula in her two victories at Ascot and Belmont last May.

Petula is currently $7 with Ladbrokes.

Storm Chaser from the in-form Luke Fernie yard firm as favourite at $2.60 with popular betting apps.
