No sweat for Perspiration at Mornington

The Ciaron Maher stable will consider a trip to Brisbane for the Winter Carnival with Perspiration after registering his maiden win at Mornington.

Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull, who runs Maher’s Cranbourne stable, said the two-year-old colt was likely to have a short break following his success in the Mornington Sires (1200m) on Saturday before potentially heading north.

Perspiration had run second at his first two starts before starting a heavily backed $2.40 betting site favourite in taking out Saturday’s race.

Ridden by Ethan Brown, Perspiration scored a 2-½ length win from Snack Bar ($5) with Just For Show ($19) a further three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Turnbull said the Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 1 could be a race Perspiration is set for rather than the Group 1 J J Atkins (1600m) two weeks later, a race the stable won last year with King Colorado.

“We’ll keep the door open on a trip to Brisbane, but either way he possibly has a let-up, slash, breather and we either focus on the spring or head to Queensland,” Turnbull said.

“It would probably be two or three weeks out and by then I think we would have a plan.

“He could possibly go to the 1400 metres up there.

“I don’t think he gets a mile with his action, so the J J Atkins is unlikely to be in the plan, but the Sires’ could be, and some Black Type would be nice.

“This race didn’t carry any today (Black Type), but it was good prize money.

“He’s still putting it together, so we’ll keep him to six and seven (furlongs) for now.”

Turnbull praised Brown with his tactics aboard Perspiration, allowing the colt to balance early.

“It was a brilliant ride. Ethan knows the track very well being a local boy,” Turnbull said.

“He got flushed mid-race but was too strong for them.”
