Cheap buy a Sure a city winner

A speck purchase as a yearling has maintained a perfect record for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr with victory at Caulfield.

After registering a debut win at Pakenham last month, three-year-old gelding Sure added the Rod Fenwick Handicap (1600m) to his record on Saturday.

Sent out the $3.40 betting site favourite under Zac Spain, Sure defeated stablemate Hydrogen Power ($21) by 2-½ lengths with Elphinstone ($3.80) a short neck away third.

Price explained that he purchased Sure, a son of So You Think, for $90,000 at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in 2022.

“When he walked past me, I thought, ‘geez, he’s got good movement’,” Price said.

“But then I saw him up close after I had bought him and I thought, ‘yeah, OK, no wonder he was only $90,000’.

“He’s fine and if they win like that, they have capacity. He’s got a turn of foot and was able to loop them.

“He had a sustained effort on him today, and it augurs well for his future, especially as an upcoming four-year-old.”

Price said he was unsure how far Sure would go on in this campaign, adding that any travel interstate had already been ruled out.

“He’s a lightly framed, immature horse, and I think taking him interstate, too soon, has an extra layer of risk on it, especially if you want to go up in distance,” Price said.

“So, being a lightly framed, lightly fleshed horse, I think we’ll keep him here.

“If there’s another run in him, good, if not he can go to the paddock and come back as a nice four-year-old.”

Sure has already topped the $100,000 prizemoney mark in his two victories and Price said plans were to keep the gelding in the ownership he now races in.

“You can tell the Hong Kong agents that he’s not for sale,” Price said.
