Roebourne racing community shines a light on mental health

An aluminium tree was given a blue makeover for mental health awareness on Friday in preparation for the annual Roebourne Cup.

The painting is part of the Racing WA Community Fund’s mission to paint a blue tree at each of the State’s 47 race clubs in collaboration with the Blue Tree Project.

At the event, Racing WA and the Blue Tree Project were joined by the Nor West Jockey Club (NWJC), Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel MLA and local racing participants to promote the message that “it’s OK to not be OK”.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia CEO Ian Edwards said painting the tree ahead of Roebourne Cup was a timely reminder for participants and racegoers to check in with loved ones.

“Regional race clubs such as the NWJC play a vital role in fostering social connection, which we know is crucial for our mental health wellbeing,” Ian said.

“For many, Cup Day is a highlight in the Pilbara social calendar as it offers an opportunity for people to take a break from their daily routines, meet up with friends and family and have fun day out.

“This is the first tree we’ve painted in the Pilbara, and we hope it encourages racing participants and attendees to check in with themselves as well as their loved ones.”

NWJC Secretary Debbie Johnson echoed Ian’s sentiments and said the Roebourne Cup provided many benefits to the town and surrounding areas.

“We hope having a blue tree at the Roebourne Racecourse prompts people not to shy away from tough conversations,” Debbie said.

“The impact of mental health is often significant and far-reaching due to the connectedness of our communities.

“Given the nature of work and that many people across the Pilbara do work hard, the Roebourne Cup is a great social event which offers the chance for the community to connect.”

The NWJC is one of four racing clubs in the Pilbara, with racing in the region contributing $17.8 million to the WA economy each year and sustaining 140 full-time jobs.
