Mick Price circles the Ballarat Cup with Globe

Mick Price is keen to try and get Globe one more feature win before setting his sights on 2025 with the untapped gelding.

The six-year-old son of Charm Spirit is part of a bumper set of 39 entries for this Saturday’s Ballarat Cup.

Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, sees the $500,000 Listed event as a good progression for the last-start Cranbourne Cup winner and he would love to see him come through it unscathed so the trouble-plagued galloper can head to the paddock on his own accord.

“I don’t want to be banging him around in summer, I don’t think,” Price said.

“It’s an opportune time to give him a breather, he will have done a good job, and then reset him for the autumn.

“Whether that’s Melbourne and/or Sydney, but there should be nice races for him.

“He will basically run in Black Type races from here on in.

“If he’s right place, right time over 2000 metres, he’ll definitely front up in the right Group 1, but he just has to prove himself and work his way in.”

Globe has won five of his nine starts but the Ballarat Cup will be his first go at 2000 metres.

The longest race he has contested was an 1800m benchmark 100 handicap at Sandown on May last year, which he won by four lengths.

“He’s a big strong horse, you’d think 2000 metres would be no drama,” Price said.

“I’m hoping it comes at the right time, it’s only two weeks (between runs) but I think it will be OK.”

Among the others entries for the Ballarat Cup are eight Ciaron Maher-trained gallopers, including Future History, Smokin’ Romans and New Energy, local hope Berkeley Square, Muramasa, Young Werther and his Melbourne Cup-winning stablemate Vow And Declare.
