Aztec Ruler thriving ahead of Melbourne racing test

Trainer Stefan Vahala believes Aztec Ruler has taken a step forward following his impressive Melbourne debut, as the five-year-old prepares for another interstate challenge in Saturday’s Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Sandown.
A dual black-type winner in Perth, Aztec Ruler made a strong impression at Flemington two weeks ago when he surged late to finish a close second in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m), just behind It’sourtime.
Vahala is confident the gelding has continued to thrive since his arrival in Melbourne. Several factors, including his preferred distance, recent form, and positive feedback from jockey Jye McNeil, have bolstered the trainer’s expectations for another top performance.
“He’s a gun, the horse just turns up every time,” Vahala told Racing WA.
“Wherever you take him he turns up.
“He’s eating the house down and is bouncing.
“He’s a really happy horse.
“Jye said his work was awesome and he pulled up super.
“He’s improved on the first-up run.”
Aztec Ruler has a strong record at 1400m, a distance at which he claimed victories in last year’s Listed Bunbury Stakes and Carbine Club of WA Stakes. With two wins from four second-up starts, the conditions appear ideal for him to shine again.
A powerful track gallop at Flemington on Tuesday has further fueled optimism, with McNeil giving glowing feedback after the workout.
Purchased for $40,000 from Quanah Park Thoroughbreds at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions Sale, Aztec Ruler has earned nearly $700,000 in prizemoney with seven wins and six placings from 22 starts.
This weekend, Aztec Ruler will line up against seven competitors in the John Dillon Stakes, jumping from barrier five. McNeil will again take the reins.
