Another Wil land emotional G1 CF Orr Stakes

Jamie Melham secured her first Group 1 win under her new name, guiding Another Wil to victory in the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. This triumph was particularly meaningful following her recent marriage to fellow jockey Ben Melham.
Another Wil, trained by Ciaron Maher, was bred by Colin and Janice McKenna, though Colin sadly passed away last year due to a brain tumor. His absence made the victory all the more emotional for connections.
"I’ve thought about this day and even dreamed about it over the past few days," Melham said. "It’s incredible how racing brings moments like this together. Colin’s birthday was just on Tuesday, and I know he’s watching over us."
Starting as the $3.30 second favorite, Another Wil managed to edge out $2.60 betting app favourite Mr Brightside by a short neck, while Steparty ($14) finished 4¾ lengths behind in third.
Trainer Ciaron Maher emphasized how much Colin McKenna loved Another Wil and was patient with his development. "Colin always believed in this horse. I resisted pushing him too soon, allowing him to mature, and it’s heartbreaking that Colin isn’t here to see it," Maher said.
Now five years old with only 14 starts and nine wins, Another Wil has the potential for a lengthy and successful career. Maher hopes he can follow in the footsteps of Mr Brightside, who is two years older and continues to perform at the highest level.
"It was an exciting race. Mr Brightside is a tough competitor to get past, but I’m thrilled with how Another Wil performed. Hopefully, he can continue progressing over the next couple of years," Maher added.
Looking ahead, Another Wil could target the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 22, followed by the Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington on March 8.
"He’ll follow the weight-for-age path, and we’ll see how things shape up in Sydney for the big mile races. The All-Star Mile at Flemington looks like a natural progression, given his strong form there," Maher concluded.
