Mount Barker Cup continues good times for Madi Derrick

Posted by RS NewsWire at 9:33pm on February 11th

Jockey Madi Derrick continued her impressive run of form, securing a double for trainer Ray Malpass, including a standout victory in the Mount Barker Cup (2000m) on Sunday.

Seven-year-old gelding Big Swoop proved too strong for his competitors, rounding off a successful day for Malpass, who also saw Sirota claim a hard-fought victory earlier, despite covering extra ground throughout the race.

Derrick’s triumph in the Mount Barker Cup comes shortly after her biggest career win aboard Twain’s Angel in the Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) at Ascot two weeks prior.

Having recently completed her apprenticeship, Madi Derrick is eager to capitalize on her momentum, navigating the transition to senior riding with confidence.

“I’ve had a pretty good few weeks,” Derrick said. “Hopefully the luck can keep going.”

Starting from barrier four, Derrick positioned Big Swoop just behind Divine Mercy, who attempted to lead from the front.

Big Swoop surged ahead in the final 100 meters, securing victory by 1 ½ lengths over runner-up Brave Contender. Divine Mercy held on for third, finishing ahead of Deadly And Fast, while race favorite Beautiful Baroque claimed fourth after a wide run.

Derrick credited Big Swoop’s resilience in maintaining his strength to the finish.

“He travelled quite strongly early, and I just wanted him to come back that half a horse,” Derrick said.

“When the speed picked up at the 600m mark, I had to work on him a bit, but he was tough late.”

“I knew he’d stay the trip well. Even though we went out hard early, I expected the others to gain late, but he’s a pretty tough horse.”

Returning $8.80 and $3.50 on the Tab, Big Swoop’s career was nearly cut short last year before a decision was made to continue racing.

With 59 starts to his name, he has secured seven wins and 16 minor placings, accumulating nearly $200,000 in prize money.

Leading into the Mount Barker Cup, he had been in solid form, placing third at Bunbury and second at Albany before a seventh-place finish at Ascot.

Trainer Ray Malpass had confidence in Big Swoop’s ability heading into the race.

“It was a great performance, and he’s been a handy horse over the years,” Malpass said.

“Madi rode him perfectly in the end.”

“The horse was in great shape, and I told the owner he was ready today (Sunday).”

“A great ride, and it all came together well.”
