McEvoy mare to show she’s Bossy in the VOBIS Gold Comet
Ballarat-based trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy believe Bossy Nic’s ability to handle straight-track racing will be a key asset as she returns to Flemington.
Having won her last start at the track, Bossy Nic is preparing for the VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m) this Saturday.
The race, open exclusively to VOBIS Gold-qualified horses, has attracted a competitive nine-horse field.
Boasting a prize fund of $175,000—of which $96,250 is awarded to the winner—there’s also a $23,000 owner’s bonus on offer for qualifying runners.
“We’re targeting the VOBIS prize pool. She’s in terrific shape and loves running on the straight,” said Tony McEvoy.
Bossy Nic has been consistent this season, beginning her campaign at Ballarat in December. Saturday marks her sixth start this preparation.
She ran third at Flemington on January 18 before stepping up to Group 3 level at Sandown, where she finished tenth behind Oakleigh Plate runner-up She’s Bulletproof on February 1.
Dropping in class, Bossy Nic impressed with a dominant 1200m victory at Flemington on February 15.
McEvoy acknowledged that the cutback to 1000m poses a challenge, but the race conditions make it an appealing opportunity.
“Dropping to 1000 metres is a minor gamble, but being a restricted VOBIS race, she should be well suited,” McEvoy said.
“We’ve kept her fresh with dressage work and swimming. She’s in top form.”
Beau Mertens, who piloted Bossy Nic to her last victory, will once again take the reins on Saturday.
