Revelare to chase ballot exempt ticket into Melbourne Cup

Five-time winner Revelare is ready to step up in trip as he prepares for his toughest test yet—a 2400m handicap at Caulfield this Saturday.
The Robert Hickmott-trained gelding has been in outstanding form, notching up five consecutive victories after kicking off his campaign with a runner-up finish at Seymour in December. His recent successes include dominant performances at Sandown and two impressive wins over 2000m at Flemington.
This weekend’s run will serve as a crucial stepping stone toward the Listed Roy Higgins (2600m) at Flemington on March 29, with a potential path to the Melbourne Cup in sight.
Hickmott, who previously trained for renowned Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams, is following a proven formula for success.
“Lloyd always said a horse needs a 2400m run before tackling a similar distance at Flemington,” Hickmott said.
“It’s a nice little progression and all going well he’ll go there.”
Jockey Ryan Hurdle has been aboard for all six of Revelare’s starts this campaign, but his ability to continue the partnership will depend on the assigned weight. Hurdle, who competed at Murray Bridge on Saturday, finds it difficult to ride below 56kg.
“If he gets Ryan’s weight, he’ll ride him, but if he doesn’t, I’m sure there will be a few putting their hands up to ride him,” Hickmott said.
“Anything below 56 (kilos) will probably pull Ryan up, but he’s been over in Adelaide, and it’s been pretty warm over there, so we’ll see how he goes.
“The Roy Higgins will be the next target, but first we’ll see how he comes through this run.”
With a Melbourne Cup exemption on the line for the Roy Higgins winner, Revelare’s upcoming performances could set him on a path to Australia’s greatest race.
