Herbert Park ready for The Mystic Journey challenge

Trainer Tony Noonan has long-term ambitions for Herbert Park, but for now, he is happy to let his mare continue her development before stepping up to Stakes company.

Noonan believes patience will pay off, and he is keen to see her improve with each run, starting with The Mystic Journey (1100m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

Herbert Park was unplaced in a five-horse field when resuming over the same track and trip on February 22, finishing behind Samangu.

To ensure she is sharper for her second run back, Noonan sent her to Caulfield on Tuesday for a gallop, convinced she is ready to show more.

“She’s had one run back now, and we felt that spacing her runs three weeks apart would have her in the right shape for Saturday,” Noonan said.

“The race didn’t suit her first-up. They went slow early, the leaders kicked on the turn, and she was left chasing.”

“She’s still learning her craft, and she’s much more effective when the tempo is strong and she can build into the race.”

Herbert Park proved her ability last winter by recording three consecutive victories, including one on rain-affected ground at Caulfield.

Now, Noonan wants to see if she can perform at the same level on firmer footing.

“She’s got good form on softer tracks, so it’ll be interesting to see if she can handle firmer conditions just as well,” Noonan said.

“She’s a big mare, and we didn’t want to leave her in the paddock too long between runs. After this, we’ll decide whether she has a freshen-up or keeps going.”

“There are a few options later in the season, including a trip to Sydney or a Stakes race in Adelaide in May, so we’ll take it step by step.”

“She’s done everything right at home, her work has been great, and we’re looking forward to seeing how she goes on Saturday.”
