Dream Showdown set-up for Azzopardi
In Saturday’s $1 million The Showdown at Caulfield, David Azzopardi’s Dream Thoroughbreds will be represented by his filly, Befuddle, trained by John Sadler. While Azzopardi will naturally be cheering for Befuddle, he also has a vested interest in another runner—McGaw, whom Azzopardi bred and sold for $14,000 at last year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
Azzopardi’s connection to McGaw goes beyond the sale, as the horse has already added value to Azzopardi’s breeding program, with McGaw’s sister fetching $160,000 at the Magic Millions sale. Azzopardi is eager to see McGaw perform well, and while he supports Befuddle, he wouldn’t mind seeing McGaw win either. "Obviously, I’m backing Befuddle, but I wouldn’t be too upset if McGaw wins," Azzopardi said.
Befuddle’s chances are strong after her dashing all-the-way victory at Moonee Valley last month. With barrier six in Saturday’s race, Azzopardi believes Befuddle has a genuine shot at finishing in the top three. "If she runs out the 1200 meters well, she’s in with a great chance," he said.
At $15 in the market, Befuddle’s odds reflect her competitive form, and Azzopardi is confident she’ll be in the mix come race day.
