Pride Of Jenni makes racing return in the Peter Young Stakes
Trainer Ciaron Maher is thrilled to see Pride Of Jenni return to the track in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The former Horse of the Year has been out of action for over four months following a bleeding attack. Her retirement was announced after a disappointing run in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Flemington in November.
Pride Of Jenni, now seven, has had an impressive career, including a win in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) and a second-place finish in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m). However, her last outing in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) was lackluster. Maher is optimistic about her return, noting her strong trial performances and a new approach to racing her over 1800m fresh. "She’s never won before at 1400 (metres), so we’ve taken a different tact this time," he said.
Despite her lack of first-up wins in eight attempts, Maher is encouraged by her improved behavior and preparation. "Every prep she has got a little bit kinder in her manners," he said. "This prep has been no different, and she was very kind in her trial. It’s exciting to have her back."
Pride Of Jenni’s next steps will be decided after Saturday’s race, with potential targets including the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) or the Sydney Autumn Carnival. "One step at a time," Maher said. Pride Of Jenni is currently the $2.50 second favorite, behind Godolphin’s Zardozi at $2.20.
