Ciaron Maher provides insight into Pride Of Jenni's performance
Trainer Ciaron Maher has provided some insight into the underwhelming performance of Pride Of Jenni in Saturday’s Australian Cup.
Maher revealed that the mare came through the race in good condition and suggested that the run could be attributed to the challenge of backing up just two weeks after her strong first-up effort in the G2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m).
“She’s actually come through it quite well,” Maher said on RSN927.
“The only thing I can put it down to is running close to a peak first up and then running back two weeks, it’s always very tough to do that.”
Despite Pride Of Jenni leading for a time, she faded to finish ninth, but Maher had no issues with the ride from jockey Craig Newitt.
“I don’t think he did anything wrong,” Maher stated.
A potential trip to Sydney to defend her Queen Elizabeth Stakes crown remains a possibility, but a decision will be made shortly.
“She’s sound and is her old self,” Maher added.
“I’ll just see how she is this week.”
