Vinrock continues dream run for Matt Laurie in Inglis Sires

Matt Laurie’s Group 1 tally has doubled in just four days after Vinrock’s victory in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes kept the trainer’s winning streak alive.
Vinrock remained unbeaten after three starts and added his name to the record books by completing the VRC-ATC Sires’ Produce double—something not achieved since 1981.
The stable’s other star, Treasurethe Moment, won the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and is now the top contender for the Australian Oaks (2400m).
This latest success gives Laurie five Group 1 wins in his career, his first coming in 2013 with Escado in the South Australian Derby.
“It’s a dream come true,” Laurie said.
“We don’t buy huge amounts of yearlings and we do OK in our selection. I am just very proud of the horse and very proud of the team.
“Having a horse like Treasurethe Moment is incredible but to pick out a colt at the sales and be here winning a Group One three starts later, it’s mind blowing.”
Bred by I Am Invincible, Vinrock was passed in at the Inglis Premier Sale but was later purchased privately for $300,000 by Laurie.
The colt’s earnings now top $800,000, though his stud value is expected to far exceed that figure.
“I found him at the Premier Sale. He was a lovely looking horse. I valued him a lot higher and he passed in and I managed to go down and buy him post-sale,” Laurie recalled.
“I’ve got quite a bit of family in him too so it is very special.”
Laurie had earmarked the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) as a target even before Vinrock debuted.
“Straight after I rode him for the first time after him being broken in,” he said.
He confirmed the colt is being aimed at the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) if he recovers well from Saturday’s race.
Vinrock justified his $3.40 quote by winning narrowly over State Visit and Buffalo in a tight finish that saw less than a length between the top five.
Golden Slipper second-placegetter Wodeton finished fourth after covering ground, while Rivellino came fifth after being held up in the home stretch.
