Overpass ready to make history in The Quokka 2025

Overpass returns to Ascot this Saturday in search of a rare three-peat as he lines up for another crack at the The Quokka, hoping to add to his incredible record at the WA track.

The gelding has dominated at Ascot, winning The Quokka twice and also capturing back-to-back Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes victories, all over the 1200m distance.

Trainer Bjorn Baker is trying something slightly new this time by running him second-up after a strong second to Briasa in the recent T J Smith Stakes rather than first-up as in previous Quokka preparations.

“I’m looking forward to getting back over there,” Baker said. “It’s become like a second home during this part of the year.”

“He’s travelled well, and we’ve kept things pretty much the same as previous years. He didn’t have a gut-buster in the TJ, and he’s pulled up really well.”

“Honestly, he looks better now than he did heading into last year’s race.”

Ascot’s layout clearly suits Overpass, and Baker attributes the horse’s success to his racing style.

“He can just get on the speed, maintain that tempo and handle pressure — it’s a huge advantage. That last Winterbottom win showed how tough he is under fire.”

Overpass currently leads the market for The Quokka at $2.30, with Headwall and Front Page next in line at $6 and $8 respectively.

“I think he’s been a bit underrated in the past, maybe even by us, but he’s proving his quality. He’s going as well as ever,” Baker added.

“The competition is strong — Headwall’s very capable, and Front Page will be there early — but if Overpass runs up to his best, he’ll be right in the finish.”

“He’s been a dream horse for us. We’re just enjoying the ride.”
