Three-time G1 winner Happy Clapper dies
Happy Clapper, one of the most admired racehorses of his generation, has passed away at 14 after suffering from colic, leaving behind a legacy of courage and consistency at the elite level.
Trained throughout his career by Pat Webster, the gelding was a fan favourite known for his valiant efforts against champion mare Winx, facing her 11 times and finishing second to her six times, including in the 2018 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Chris Waller, who trained Winx, offered a heartfelt tribute to the gelding on social media.
“Our thoughts go out to the connections of Happy Clapper and the Webster family,” Waller wrote.
“He was a horse who we had a lot of respect for; Winx had to be on her best game when running against him because he was capable of anything. He breathed down our neck a number of times and could have easily beaten us had luck gone his way, and against us.
“Well done Pat for what you achieved with Happy Clapper and for what he brought to Sydney racing.”
Happy Clapper gave Webster his first elite-level win in the 2017 Epsom Handicap, and followed it with major victories in the 2018 Canterbury Stakes and Doncaster Mile.
Across 48 starts, Happy Clapper compiled 12 wins and 18 placings, banking nearly $7.3 million in earnings and earning widespread respect for his toughness and tenacity.
