Highvol makes stellar debut in 2025 Anzac Day Stakes

Highvol made a sensational debut at Flemington, becoming the first horse to win the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) on debut, justifying trainer Nick Ryan’s bold call to kick off the colt’s career in black-type company.
Starting at $9, the son of Microphone sat on speed under Jamie Mott and fought gamely to defeat Stay Cosmic ($4.60) by a head, with Just Kick ($5.50) finishing fast for third a neck back.
Stable rep Damien Kefford explained the team’s approach to Highvol’s development and why they took a chance on such a challenging first-up assignment.
“From day dot, we’ve always had a big opinion on him,” Kefford said. “He’s very revy. He’s always been a bit like a very typical Microphone. So we gelded him, gave him a lot of jump outs. Nick decided to roll the dice here, Nick always thought he’d be a 1400m horse plus.”
“So it is a big task to come to Flemington for your first start over 1400 but the wraps that we had on him were warranted today.”
Highvol could now be aimed at Brisbane’s winter carnival, with the J J Atkins Stakes under strong consideration.
“There is some options up in Queensland even, for the end of their winter carnival,” Kefford added. “We’ll see how he comes through this run and then maybe plot a path to some two-year-old races up there.”
Jockey Jamie Mott praised the colt’s professionalism, saying he defied the pre-race expectations of immaturity.
“Rhys McLeod called me this morning… said he’s just not quite there yet… but he didn’t seem immature out there today, he was very professional and won really well,” she said.
“He jumped, put himself on the speed, peaked late but will take improvement. He was an absolute gentleman to ride.”
The Anzac Day Stakes has proven a launching pad for future elite performers like Merchant Navy and Long John—Highvol might just be next.
