American Wolf claws to 2025 VRC St Leger success
American Wolf gave trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young their first win in the prestigious VRC St Leger, outstaying his rivals in a classic staying duel at Flemington.
Sent out at $12, the son of Tivaci went stride for stride with Litzdeel ($8.50) down the straight before edging ahead to win by a long head, with Kicking King ($12) finishing a distant third, six lengths behind the front two.
“Got a beautiful run. Just sat out the back, third last, and just relaxed nice and beautifully,” said Natalie Young after the win.
“John Allen just rode him an absolute treat… he was ridden more forward last start when he won at Ballarat and to come here today and do that, it means next week he’ll be ready to roll.”
Young now has her eyes firmly set on the Group 1 South Australian Derby, hoping American Wolf recovers well from his St Leger effort.
“Definitely if he pulls up well, eats up, all the usual things, you might as well, you’re only three once. You don’t have to do much with him, he’s run 28 (hundred metres) today, he’s going to run 25 next week, so you’ve just got to tick him over basically.”
John Allen, who has a strong record in the Derby, gave a measured endorsement.
