Local trainer lands the 2025 Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool
Aaron Purcell continued his successful run at his home Carnival, adding the Wangoom Handicap to his list of Warrnambool feature victories thanks to the tough effort of Dashing on Wednesday.
The local trainer now boasts three feature wins at the iconic meet, having previously claimed the Grand Annual Steeplechase and Galleywood Hurdle. He’s only missing wins in the Warrnambool Cup and Brierly to complete the set.
A heavy track downgrade after a sudden downpour before the race played right into Dashing’s strengths, as the $9 chance powered home for a half-length win over Fortunate Kiss, with Dubai Poet back in third.
The win was a first Carnival success for jockey Tom Madden, who kept his mount rolling despite covering ground throughout the trip.
“We weren’t initially targeting the Wangoom,” Purcell said. “But with his rating, there weren’t a lot of other options. He kept improving so we gave it a go.”
“Three-wide wasn’t a bad thing on this track today, and he was strong to the line.”
Dashing has now won seven races with 14 placings from 34 starts and could be aimed at the Winter Championship series this preparation.
“That track made it feel more like 1300 metres,” Purcell said. “We’ll look to stretch him out now, and the Winter Series is a great option.”
