Makram out to cause another boilover in the Anniversary Vase
Makram is no stranger to causing betting shocks and will have another opportunity to do so when he contests Saturday’s Anniversary Vase (1600m) at Caulfield.
The Lindsay Park gelding stunned punters with a $151 win at Flemington in 2023 and returns this weekend as a $26 chance following an encouraging third in his Cranbourne comeback over 1400m.
Ben Hayes believes the six-year-old is ready to improve with the blinkers going back on.
“We liked what we saw first-up, and we think he’ll be suited by the race shape,” Hayes said. “There’s pressure in this race, which will help, and he’s ready to hit the line hard.”
Formerly based in the UK, Makram quickly made his mark in Australia with a Flemington win and stakes placings in the Herbert Power Stakes and Geelong Cup, building a reputation as a potential Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup runner.
He underwent surgery in 2023 and has been managed patiently ever since.
“His joints are in great shape now and he’s really enjoying his work,” Hayes said. “He’s famous for popping up at odds, so if they overdo it in front, he’ll be finishing strong.”
The race is headlined by Pride Of Jenni ($2.40), with Regal Zeus ($4.80) and Hellsing ($7) next in betting.
