Consistent Medatsu heads Chris Waller’s 2025 Gosford Cup quintet

Posted by RS NewsWire at 6:25am on May 8th

Chris Waller will send out a team of five for the Gosford Gold Cup on Saturday, hoping to secure his fourth victory in the 2100-metre contest. However, unlike previous years, none of his runners are expected to start near the top of the market, with all listed at double-figure odds.

Medatsu, who currently leads the Waller-trained quintet in betting at $13, returns after finishing fourth in last week's Wagga Cup (2000m). He will benefit from a better draw at Gosford, jumping from barrier two.

“From a wide draw the other day he just got a long way back so we will try to use the draw and have him a bit closer,” Waller said.

“He ticks a few boxes and he’s a decent horse.”

Medatsu’s campaign has been steady, including a fifth in the Albury Cup (2000m). He’ll again be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who has partnered him through the campaign.

Stablemate Mr Waterville, who missed a start in the Sydney Cup (3200m), has been redirected and freshened up for this race. Waller believes it could be the right stepping stone toward the Brisbane Cup (3200m) in June.

“He’s had lots of excuses along the way but he’s well and he’s a rough place chance on Saturday,” Waller added.

Meanwhile, co-trainer Tom Charlton has indicated Klondike is unlikely to run due to a wide draw. The Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington is being considered as a backup option.

“We had a slightly negative run with him the other day and we don’t want to do the same thing again,” Charlton said.

The Gosford Gold Cup is one of several qualifying races for the Big Dance later in the year. This year's renewal features defending champion Hezashocka, currently favoured at $5.
