Waller import out to rebound in 2025 The Coast

Wootton Verni will get another chance to shine when he lines up in the $500,000 The Coast (1600m) at Gosford, following a forgettable Australian debut last month.

The French import was backed into favouritism for a Benchmark 100 race at Randwick on April 26, but failed to meet expectations after racing wide throughout and finishing midfield behind Punch Lane.

Trainer Chris Waller attributed the market confidence to the gelding’s strong European credentials rather than his recent local work.

“He had shown us that he’s got ability but his overseas form was very good so I’d say that’s where the support came from first-up,” Waller said.

“But we do think he will make the grade in some good races here.

This will be his last run and hopefully we will bring him back for a race like the Epsom Handicap.”

Jay Ford will be aboard Wootton Verni from barrier seven, which looks more favourable than his first-up gate.

Waller believes the four-year-old will bounce back after being unsuited by conditions at Randwick.

“It was a tricky track that day. The rail was out a long way, it was very soft and he will definitely improve,” he said.

Mare Of Mt Buller also represents Waller in The Coast, resuming for the first time since winning the Epona Stakes (1900m).

“She just needs a bit of luck from the draw but she is racing well and it’s great prizemoney for a horse like her,” Waller commented.
