Winter campaign kicks off at Caulfield

After a stint in the northern states, Charterhouse is poised to make his seasonal debut in the Thoroughbred Club Of Australia Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield, with plans to focus on Melbourne's winter racing circuit.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding, originally from Ireland, had a notable Australian debut, including a win in the Cranbourne Cup on wet turf. However, his subsequent performances in Queensland and New South Wales were inconsistent, leading to a strategic reset.

Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull explained that the team has been methodical in preparing Charterhouse for the Winter Championship Series, aiming to replicate or improve upon his second-place finish in last year's final at Flemington.

“He’s been coming along steadily,” Turnbull stated.

“We provided him with a substantial break and have been working on reconditioning him.

“Previously, he seemed off his game, and race day insights suggested he wasn't fully committed.

“Now, he's undergone extensive training and is in good physical shape. This race will help us determine his mental preparedness.

“We’re optimistic about his readiness, hence our decision to start his campaign now.”

Turnbull also recalled Charterhouse's commendable effort in the Country Cup (2000m) at Caulfield last November, where he finished a close second to Torranzino, showcasing his adaptability over extended distances.

“While 2000 meters might be a bit beyond his optimal range, he performs well when kept fresh over distances between a mile and 1800 meters,” Turnbull added.

“He'll be staying in Melbourne this winter, with the Winter Championship Series as his primary goal, which is why we've initiated his training at this point.”
