Fiore a West Star in the 2025 Northam Stakes
West Star showed exactly why he’s considered one of the most promising young gallopers in the west with a barnstorming victory in Sunday’s Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m).
The three-year-old son of Playing God proved too good for his older rivals, even after covering extra ground throughout. Once Lucy Fiore asked for an effort at the 250-metre mark, West Star surged clear to win by 1¾ lengths over Magnificent Andy, with Comfort Me close behind in third.
“It was a really impressive win,” Fiore said. “I was kinda not worried when I was three deep… I knew I had the horse underneath me. When I said go, he gave me everything.”
Fiore was backing up from a fifth placing on Generosity in the Group 1 Goodwood at Morphettville the day before and made the most of her first ride on West Star, who is now a two-time stakes winner.
The gelding’s only unplaced finish came in the high-pressure Quokka (1200m), where he was the only three-year-old in the $5 million feature. Sunday’s win lifts his tally to five victories and two placings from just eight starts.
A $175,000 Magic Millions purchase, West Star has banked over $700,000 and looks set for bigger targets. Trainer Simon Miller said a Melbourne spring campaign is likely for both West Star and Generosity.
“He's shown he’s a genuine talent. That was a strong field and he put them away late,” Miller said.
