Melbourne Cup hero Without A Fight retired

One of Australia's modern staying greats, Without A Fight, has been retired from racing, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career highlighted by his Melbourne Cup triumph.

Trainer duo Anthony and Sam Freedman made the decision after the gelding trialled over 1500m at Caulfield Heath on Thursday morning. Although he had been entered for a return in Brisbane, the team chose to retire him while still sound and competitive.

The 2023 Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup winner joined a rare club of horses to win both races in the same season, etching his name into racing history.

He was originally trained in the UK by Simon and Ed Crisford and finished 13th in the 2022 Melbourne Cup. Remaining in Australia, he won at Group level in Brisbane before his crowning glory during the 2023 spring.

After a tendon injury in early 2024, Without A Fight returned to place in the Group 1 Champions Stakes at Flemington and finished his career in the Hong Kong Vase, where he struggled on foreign turf.

He had been building up to contest the Doomben Cup (2000m), but the decision was made to retire him ahead of the race.

“He has been an absolute gentleman to have in the stable and will be remembered as one of the finest stayers of his generation,” the Freedmans said in a statement.

“His Cups double not only delivered the pinnacle of our training careers but also created unforgettable memories for all involved – from our dedicated track riders, stable hands, vets, farriers, to those at the spelling farms.

“He has left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to be a part of his journey.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to his owner, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, for entrusting us with the privilege of training such a remarkable horse in Australia. We are truly indebted to him for the opportunity.

“As Without A Fight begins the next chapter of his life, we wish him the very best in his retirement.

“He has given us all so much – and for that, we are forever grateful.”

Without A Fight finishes his racing career with 11 victories from 24 starts and earnings exceeding $9.7 million.
