Dragonne leads Dwyer back to big stage in 2025 Magic Millions National 2YO Classic

Sunshine Coast trainer Shaun Dwyer is hopeful that Dragonne Rouge can provide him with a career highlight in Friday night’s Magic Millions National 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast — his first win in a million-dollar race.

Dwyer previously won the Magic Millions Classic with Regimental Gal in 2003, long before the prize pool reached seven figures. That filly would go on to become a Group 1 star, winning both the Black Caviar Lightning and William Reid Stakes.

Now, with Dragonne Rouge, Dwyer sees a new opportunity — this time with a modestly priced filly carrying high expectations.

“I’ve been up this alley a few times,” Dwyer said. “You’ve got to enjoy the moment. Fingers crossed she gets her chance.”

Dragonne Rouge’s backstory is just as notable. She’s a full sister to French Blaze, a highly regarded colt who died before racing. Thanks to Andrew Williamson’s referral, Dwyer was asked to buy a yearling on behalf of the same ownership group, and Dragonne Rouge was the pick.

“It was really gifted through Andrew recommending me to these owners,” Dwyer said.

She has responded with three consecutive wins — a maiden at the Sunshine Coast, a city win at Doomben, and a Listed success at Eagle Farm in the Calaway Gal. Originally, Dwyer was eyeing the JJ Atkins, but shifted plans to the National 2YO Classic due to its timing and the filly’s maturity.

“She’s going well and I couldn’t be happier with her,” Dwyer said. “If she jumps and travels in the first five, she’ll be strong late.”

Andrew Mallyon will ride her from barrier six against a competitive field including Prince Tycoon, Amosu, and Sisstainable.
