Sequista in bid to get 2025 Oxlade Stakes campaign back on track

Sequista’s path to Brisbane has taken a detour after a minor incident during transport sidelined her from a key lead-up race, but trainer Gerald Ryan still believes a winter stakes race could be within reach.

The promising filly was the early favourite for a two-year-old feature at Gosford but was withdrawn after suffering cuts to her leg when getting off the float.

“She wasn’t being difficult or anything like that,” Ryan explained. “Her leg slipped over the edge while stepping down, which left her with three or four small abrasions.”

Although Sequista didn’t miss any trackwork, the mishap disrupted her program. She won’t line up in this Saturday’s Bill Carter Stakes in Brisbane, as initially planned, but is a likely starter in a Randwick 1200m event instead.

“The only concern is she’ll be running off a five or six-week gap, and the track’s expected to be a heavy 10,” Ryan said. “That said, she’s fit, she’s fresh, and she’ll go around early in the day.”

Sequista will carry 56kg with Braith Nock aboard, and should she perform well, a trip north could still be on the cards. The Oxlade Stakes (1200m) on Stradbroke Handicap day remains the stable’s long-term target.
