Benagil’s has to overcome the odds to win the 2025 Queensland Oaks

Glen Thompson’s rising star Benagil will attempt to add another chapter to her fairytale season when she tackles the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on Saturday. Already a Group 1 winner in the Australasian Oaks, she’s now favourite to continue her path toward the Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Benagil stands on the edge of a unique achievement — no filly has ever captured the Australasian Oaks, The Roses, and Queensland Oaks treble. Currently a $3.10 elect, she’s seen as the standout filly in this year’s The Roses field despite drawing barrier 16.

“She’s come through her Adelaide win in fantastic order,” Thompson said. “We replicated the same path she had going into the Oaks and Mark [Zahra] gave her a solid tick of approval in her latest jumpout.”

Although Thompson admits Doomben may not play to Benagil’s strengths, he remains hopeful that her quality and closing speed will help her overcome a tricky gate.

“She’s likely to get back from that draw, but she’s proven she can storm home. Eagle Farm will be more her track in the Oaks,” he said.

Benagil’s main rivals include Phillia ($5), who is chasing four straight wins for David Vandyke, and Polymnia ($6), who has been ultra-consistent throughout the season.

A win on Saturday would set Benagil up for a crack at history in the Queensland Oaks, with her connections daring to dream of a treble few believed possible.
