Polymnia travels far and wide for a sniff of The Roses
Polymnia will have to overcome yet another difficult draw as she steps out in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on Saturday, having once again landed the outside barrier in a feature race. Co-trainer Tom Charlton acknowledges the challenge but remains hopeful the talented filly can rise to the occasion.
“She has drawn poorly again which has been the flavour of her preparation,” Charlton said. “But she’s handled the travel well and had a good freshen-up since Adelaide.”
The daughter of Dundeel has made a habit of running well despite wide barriers, finishing strongly in both the Adrian Knox Stakes and Australasian Oaks. She now lines up against familiar opposition, including Oaks winner Benagil, who is again the favourite.
Polymnia is one of several Brisbane runners for the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton team this weekend, with stablemate Klondike tackling the Doomben Cup. In Sydney, attention turns to Hurstville Zagreb, who is looking to confirm Queensland Derby credentials in the Chalouhi Handicap (1800m).
Hurstville Zagreb resumed with a luckless second at Gosford after missing the Australian Derby due to a tie-up stall mishap. A strong showing at Randwick could set him on a Brisbane path.
“He’s clearly talented and should appreciate Randwick and the rise to 1800m,” Charlton said. “The aim is to earn a shot at the Queensland Derby.”
