2025 Stradbroke Handicap trial for Red Galaxy

Red Galaxy will tackle a much stiffer challenge than originally planned at Sandown on Saturday, but trainer Greg Eurell sees it as a timely opportunity to test his exciting gelding's potential.

Initially nominated for the benchmark 84 race, Red Galaxy was instead accepted into the tougher benchmark 100 Senet Gambling Law Experts Handicap (1400m) due to the smaller field.

“We had him in both races, but he wouldn’t have got a run in the 84, so we’ve had to go the harder route,” Eurell said. “It’s a strong test but one we’re happy to take on.”

Should Red Galaxy measure up, Eurell said a tilt at the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 14 becomes a legitimate option.

“If he goes well, Brisbane becomes a real consideration. If not, we’ll look at races closer to home,” he said.

Red Galaxy, who has three wins from five starts, was a stylish winner first-up at Sale and has impressed his trainer with how he’s matured this campaign.

“He’s always had ability, but being a big horse, we had to wait for his body to catch up,” Eurell said. “He’s finally putting it all together.”

“His preparation has been smooth this time in, and we’ve managed to keep him happy and sound.”

Eurell is optimistic that Red Galaxy can step up to the class rise and believes Saturday will be telling.

“It’s a good field, but he’s in good order,” he said. “I really like this horse, and I think we’re about to find out just how good he can be.”
