Shailer’s Star wins the 2025 Magic Millions National Classic

Trainer Paul Shailer landed a career milestone at the Gold Coast on Friday night as Isti Star claimed the $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic (1000m) with a commanding performance.

The daughter of Better Than Ready was expertly handled by jockey Michael Rodd and delivered on her promise with a strong front-running effort to defeat Prince Tycoon and Secret Sort.

“It’s a massive thrill,” said Shailer. “To win a million-dollar race on our home track, especially for long-time supporters like Brian and Helen Hooper, is very special.”

Isti Star had shown ability early but suffered setbacks including a last-place finish in the Magic Millions Debut. After a spell, she returned to form with a fourth in the Calaway Gal and an emphatic Ipswich maiden win.

Drawn well and given the perfect run, Isti Star ($7.50) burst clear late to secure her biggest win to date, leaving behind Prince Tycoon ($2.70) and outsider Secret Sort ($41).

“She’s a horse we’ve always rated highly,” said Shailer. “The patience has paid off and I think she’ll only get better with time and distance.”
