2025 JJ Atkins Stakes and Oxlade Stakes options for exciting Agarwood
Promising youngster Agarwood kept her unbeaten streak alive at Randwick on Saturday, cruising to an impressive front-running victory and putting herself in contention for a Queensland winter campaign—or a well-earned spell ahead of a spring tilt.
Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the filly followed up her debut win at Warwick Farm with a commanding performance in the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1200m), making every post a winner under Adam Hyeronimus.
Although entered for the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m), Tulloch Lodge stable rep Neil Paine suggested the Oxlade Stakes (1200m) may be a more suitable target—or they may simply put her away to focus on a spring campaign.
“It was a very easy watch,” Paine said. “Adam controlled it beautifully from the front. She’s only lightly raced, and she handled the heavy conditions well, which is always a good sign.”
Paine noted Agarwood’s physical development, describing her as a lightly built filly who will benefit significantly from time in the paddock. “She’s not a big girl, but she’s all heart and ability,” he added.
Agarwood started a short-priced favourite at $1.95 and justified the support with a 2.25-length win over Matima ($10), with Providence ($31) running into third, just ahead of stablemate Regulated Affair ($8).
Chris Waller’s team is also eyeing Queensland options for Providence, who is set for The Phoenix (1500m) ahead of a potential run in the JJ Atkins. Regulated Affair remains in consideration for the same Group 1 target.
