Casual Connection could target the 2025 Brisbane Cup

Casual Connection gave trainer John Sargent a familiar winning feeling at Randwick, claiming the PF Civil Handicap (2400m) for the second straight year and prompting consideration of another trip north for the Brisbane Cup (3200m).

The six-year-old gelding thrived on the heavy track, rolling forward and kicking clear under apprentice Molly Bourke to win by three lengths over favourite Wuddzz ($4.80), with Asgoodassobergets ($6.50) another 1-1/4 lengths away in third.

“He was really tough today,” Bourke said. “He’s a horse that needs momentum, so I made sure we kept building from a long way out. Once he gets going, he’s very hard to stop.”

Sargent said the win mirrored last year’s victory on the same program and put the gelding in line for a return trip to Queensland, pending the weather.

“He’s older now, so I’d only take him if it’s wet,” Sargent said. “He didn’t like the firm ground last year, but he loves the sting out, so we’ll just see how things unfold over the next couple of weeks.”

The win took Casual Connection’s record to eight victories, reaffirming his prowess over staying trips in the wet.

Earlier, William Stanley notched his first Saturday metro winner aboard Flying Embers ($3.40 fav) in the Midway Handicap (1400m). Trainer John Thompson praised the young jockey’s work ethic and composure.

“Kris Lees gave him a strong endorsement, and he’s lived up to that,” Thompson said. “He listens, he’s strong, and he’s hungry to improve. I think he’s got a big future.”

Flying Embers, who has impressed Thompson with her consistency and ability, is expected to continue progressing through the grades.
