Philia too good in 2025 The Roses at Doomben

David Vandyke’s tough filly Philia has emerged as the new favourite for the Queensland Oaks after leading all the way in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben.

Philia ($3.70) overcame pressure up front to notch her fourth win from six starts, fighting off late challenger Jenni’s Meadow ($31) by half a length. Movin Out ($21) was close up in third.

“She’s incredibly honest. The 2000m was a test, but she passed it with flying colours,” said Vandyke. “Kerrin (McEvoy) was positive and gave her a beautiful ride. She just kept responding.”

The win earned Philia a shot at Group 1 glory in the Queensland Oaks on June 7, a race Vandyke won previously with Gypsy Goddess.

“We’ll aim straight at the Oaks now,” Vandyke said. “She’s pulled up well and that was a perfect lead-in run. I love her attitude—she thrives in tough conditions.”

The All Too Hard filly comes from a strong family, being a half-sister to Duais, and Vandyke believes she’ll get the 2200m trip comfortably.

“She’s bred to stay and she’s shown us all campaign that she’s tough and determined. That’s exactly what you need going into a Group 1,” he said.

Philia has tightened to $3 for the Oaks with betting sites, while Benagil, who failed to fire as favourite in The Roses, has eased to $5.
