Luke Cartwright rides treble at Sandown

Posted by RS NewsWire at 9:13pm on May 24th

Luke Cartwright delivered a breakout performance at Sandown Hillside, landing a metropolitan treble aboard runners trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman in a dream three-race stretch.

The apprentice’s winning spree began in race five with Suances, a $15 chance who flashed home out wide to deny favourite Changing Colours. Next came Saban, who overcame a flat spot mid-race to win the Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1800m) for Benchmark 100 horses, holding off imports Sayedaty Sadaty and Tempesti.

“He can be a little bit difficult, this horse,” said co-trainer Katherine Coleman.

“I think the fact that Luke’s had a couple of rides on him now, he’s sort of got a feel for him and he knows that he can have a tendency to want to lay in at times as well.

“But he can hit a little bit of a flat spot and you’ve got to nurse him through it. It was a lovely, confident ride from Luke today.”

Cartwright completed the treble with Roadcone in race seven, taking full advantage of his 3kg claim to lead from start to finish in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (1600m), beating rivals by over two lengths at a betting sites price of $4.40.

“I am a bit speechless. I had a nice even book, and if they turned up, I thought they could run a really nice race,” Cartwright said.

“And for all horses to turn up and myself give them a good ride, it means a lot.”

Cartwright, who claimed down to 51kg for all three winners, was impressed with Roadcone’s effort.

“I knew if I held him down the dip and let him skip with 51 (kilograms), I think he was going to take some catching.

“I thought he’d quicken up very well, but he quickened up even better than well. So, no, I’m rapt.”

It was the first city treble for both Cartwright and Coleman, making the day especially memorable for the in-form combination.
