Gallo Nero to go the distance in 2025 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes
Saturday’s BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm looms as a crucial test for rising colt Gallo Nero as he steps up to 1400m, aiming to prove he’s worthy of a JJ Atkins start next month.
Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said the performance would determine whether the two-year-old presses on to Group 1 company or heads for a break in preparation for a spring campaign.
“His next run will determine whether he goes to the J J or whether he goes to the paddock and gets ready for the latter part of the spring,” Hawkes explained.
“This is his first time at 1400m and we’re approaching it with a bit of caution, but he’s got a stack of talent.”
After breaking his maiden at Randwick, Gallo Nero was a gallant third in the Magic Millions Classic, before being given a let-up. He resumed with a fast-finishing second in the Spirit Of Boom Classic, racing wide throughout.
“He did all the work in the run and still nearly won,” Hawkes said. “We think he was unlucky not to finish in front.”
There were initial concerns about the energy spent on a heavy track first-up, but Gallo Nero has reportedly recovered well ahead of Saturday’s contest.
“Wet ground takes its toll, especially first-up, but he’s bounced back and is in good order,” Hawkes noted.
