Stern Idol back to bigger jumps in Australian Steeplechase
Star jumper Stern Idol is set to tackle the Australian Steeplechase (3900m) this weekend as he returns to steeplechase racing for the first time this season.
The Irish-bred galloper, who began his career in France, quickly adapted to Australian conditions after joining Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in 2021, claiming nine wins from 15 jumps appearances.
This Sunday marks his return to the steeples after a pair of runs over hurdles, and expectations are high following a promising trial win at Terang under star rider Steven Pateman.
He’ll line up with a hefty 73kg in his bid to win the race, having previously won the Crisp Steeplechase (4200m) two years in a row. However, attempts at the Grand National Steeplechase have ended in disappointment.
Last year, Stern Idol ran in the Sandown Cup (3200m) on the flat on the same program but failed to fire. This time, Maher’s camp believes the bigger jumps will bring out the best in him.
“We thought it was time to put him over the fences again,” Maher’s assistant Jack Turnbull said. “He has always shown more respect and ability in the steeples, and his trial win confirmed he’s ready.”
Pateman, now recovered from injury, will reunite with the gelding and Turnbull is optimistic despite the weight. “He’s a tough customer and we’re confident he can give a good account of himself,” he said.
