Zebra Finch presses claims for the 2025 JJ Atkins Stakes

James Cummings' juvenile Zebra Finch took a significant step toward the Group 1 J.J. Atkins with a tenacious win at Rosehill, enhancing his prospects for the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Stepping out for just his third start, the colt benefitted from the addition of blinkers in the Schweppes Handicap (1300m) and responded well for jockey Kerrin McEvoy in testing conditions.

Zebra Finch ($4) sat just behind the pace and wore down Zoutanium ($14) in the run to the line, with well-backed Hidden Achievement ($2.90) flying home late for third in a tight finish.

“He’s taken a good step forward,” McEvoy said. “I liked the way he travelled with the blinkers on and he felt like he’d relish the mile trip.”

Following the victory, betting markets adjusted quickly with Zebra Finch’s odds tightening for the J.J. Atkins, now rated a $26 chance after opening at $51 earlier in the week.
