Madiyya to the 2025 Matriarch Stakes?
Madiyya kept her winning streak alive at Caulfield on Saturday, scoring her third straight win in the Rod Griffiths Handicap (1600m) for the Lindsay Park stable. The three-year-old filly produced a powerful late run under Luke Currie to justify her $1.75 favouritism.
From a wide draw, Currie opted to settle at the rear before launching a sweeping move to hold out I Only Wish ($10) by a short neck, with Belcony ($21) finishing third, a further 1-3/4 lengths away.
“We know the family very well,” said Ben Hayes, referring to her being a half-sister to Zayydani, winner of the Matriarch Stakes (2000m). “She’s done a great job this preparation… She’s gone through the grades.”
The team now plans to give Madiyya a spell with the spring in mind. “She’ll have a well-deserved break now,” Hayes confirmed. “We didn’t send her to Queensland because of the heavy tracks… now we’ve got a nice horse for the spring.”
Currie said Madiyya handled the rise in trip well. “She probably had enough on the line without being too hard on her,” he said. “She still looks like she’ll furnish with a bit more time. She’s going the right way.”
