Stakes test for Ang Pow in 2025 Bob Charley Stakes
Trainer Will Freedman is preparing for a big day with stable runner Ang Pow, who lines up in the $200,000 Bob Charley Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
Freedman, who co-trains with his father Richard, admits he’s warned Ang Pow’s owners several times that the horse might be nearing the end of his career, only for the gelding to keep proving him wrong.
“I always tell the owners he’s on his last legs and then he keeps paying for his box,” Freedman said.
“So, I’m inclined to say he’s on his last legs again and he might continue that form.
“He’s a fragile horse and the owners know his issues, but every time I doubt him he puts in another big run.
“It’s a shame he’s been littered with so many problems over this career, because if he was straight-forward he would have been a very high-quality animal, but that’s racing I guess.”
Ang Pow hasn’t raced since early January, when he was fourth behind Accredited at Randwick, following a benchmark 100 win in December. From 22 career starts, he’s collected seven wins and returns here off a sharp trial win at Rosehill on May 29.
“He just trialled up really nicely the last couple of starts,” Freedman said.
“He’ll have no weight on his back and I think he’d be a reasonable chance in a race like that.”
Among the nominations for the Bob Charley Stakes are tough sprinters such as Barber, A Little Deep, Brudenell, In Flight and stakes-winning Front Page.
