Pride Of Jenni returning home from Queensland

Champion mare Pride Of Jenni is on her way back to Victoria with owner Tony Ottobre sending one of his staff members to accompany her and fellow runner Jennilala to ensure a safe return. Ottobre has made it clear that assessing the mare’s well-being back at his Mornington Peninsula farm is the first step before making any future decisions alongside trainer Ciaron Maher.

The rising eight-year-old has not been retired, with Ottobre eyeing off a Spring return in races over a mile, especially the prestigious Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m). “There’s the chance that something may happen and I want to make sure that a member of my staff is with her just in case,” Ottobre told SENTrack. “She’s come back well, had two wins from four starts this prep and was outstanding at 1800m carrying 61 kilos.”

Her brilliant return in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes and a Listed win at Caulfield showed she’s still competitive at the highest level. Despite some uncharacteristic runs in Group 1s, Ottobre says the fire still burns: “You only retire a horse when they have had enough and don’t want to run anymore. They’ll tell you.”
